Tracking Keyword Performance

Understanding how your website performs in search results is essential for any SEO strategy. By tracking keyword performance, you can see exactly which terms are driving traffic to your site, where you rank on Google, and where there’s room for improvement.

To enable keyword tracking, you must first connect your website to Google Search Console (GSC). This allows us to pull real-time data directly from Google.

Connecting Google Search Console

Before you can monitor rankings, you need to link your Google Search Console property to your account. This one-time setup ensures your performance data is accurate and up-to-date.

  1. Navigate to Settings from your main dashboard.

  2. Select General and then click on the Google Search Console tab.

  3. Click the Connect Google Search Console button.

  4. Follow the Google OAuth prompts to sign in to your Google account and grant the necessary permissions.

  5. Once connected, select the specific Search Console Property that matches your website domain.

Make sure the domain you select in GSC exactly matches the domain you are using in your project to ensure data syncs correctly.

Understanding Your Performance Metrics

Once your account is connected, you can view detailed performance data in the Keywords dashboard. We track four primary metrics to help you gauge your SEO success:

  • Clicks: The total number of times users clicked on your website from a Google search result for a specific keyword.

  • Impressions: How many times your website appeared in search results for a keyword, even if it wasn't clicked.

  • CTR (Click-Through Rate): The percentage of impressions that resulted in a click (Clicks ÷ Impressions). A high CTR indicates your search listing is relevant and appealing to users.

  • Average Position: Your website's average ranking on Google for that keyword. For example, a position of 1 means you are the top result, while 11 usually means you are on the second page.

Monitoring Your Keywords

The Keywords dashboard (located at /dashboard/keywords) is your central hub for monitoring performance. Here’s how to make the most of it:

Filtering and Sorting

You can narrow down your data to focus on specific regions or terms:

  • Country Filter: Use the dropdown menu to see how you rank in different countries (e.g., United States, United Kingdom, etc.).

  • Search Filter: Use the search bar to find specific keywords or phrases within your list.

  • Sorting: Click on any column header (like Clicks or Position) to sort your keywords from highest to lowest or vice versa.

Keyword Difficulty

Next to your performance metrics, you’ll see a Difficulty score. This indicates how hard it is to rank in the top 10 results for that keyword on a scale of 0 to 100:

  • 0-30 (Easy): Great opportunities for quick wins.

  • 31-60 (Medium): Requires quality content and some backlinks.

  • 61-75 (Hard): Highly competitive; requires a strong SEO authority.

  • 76-100 (Very Hard): Dominated by major brands and high-authority sites.

Note on Data Lag: Google Search Console data typically has a 2-3 day delay. The metrics you see today reflect your performance from a few days ago.

Exporting Your Data

If you need to perform deeper analysis or share reports with your team, you can easily export your keyword list. Click the Export to Excel button at the top of the keyword table to download a spreadsheet containing all your current metrics and rankings.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • "No properties found": Ensure you have verified your website property within your Google Search Console account before trying to connect.

  • Missing Data: If a keyword shows "0" clicks or impressions, it may be a new term that hasn't gained enough search volume yet, or the GSC data hasn't synced for that period.

  • Expired Connection: For security, Google may occasionally expire your connection. If data stops updating, simply return to Settings and reconnect your account.

By regularly monitoring these metrics, you can identify which content is performing well and which keywords represent the best opportunities for your next SEO campaign.
