Advanced Features
Building Custom Free Tools
The SEO Tools Builder is a powerful feature designed to help you capture high-intent organic traffic by deploying custom, action-based mini-tools (like calculators, converters, and generators) directly on your own domain. Instead of just writing blog posts, you can provide interactive value that naturally attracts backlinks and social shares.
This feature is available on Pro and Agency plans. If you're on a lower tier, you may need to upgrade to access custom domain hosting and automated tool generation.
The Strategy: Why Custom Tools?
Traditional SEO often focuses on informational intent—users looking for "how-to" guides or definitions. While valuable, this traffic is often top-of-funnel and harder to convert. Custom SEO tools target action-based intent. When a user searches for a "SaaS ROI Calculator" or a "Keyword Density Checker," they aren't just looking for information; they are looking to solve a specific problem.
By providing these tools on your domain, you achieve three major goals:
Higher Conversion Rates: Users interacting with a tool are more engaged than those just reading a blog post. They are actively using your site to solve a problem, making them more likely to click your Call-to-Action.
Natural Backlink Magnet: High-quality tools are frequently cited and linked to by other websites, bloggers, and industry experts. This boosts your overall domain authority and helps your entire site rank better.
Lower Competition: Many "tool-related" keywords have high search volume but lower keyword difficulty (KD) than competitive informational keywords. Our AI identifies these "sweet spot" opportunities for you.
How the SEO Tools Builder Works
The system uses AI-driven keyword research to identify "tool-related" keywords with low competition (Difficulty < 30) but high conversion potential. Once set up, the builder follows a 90-day plan to automatically generate and deploy one new tool per week (approximately 5 tools per month) at 6 AM UTC.
Each tool is fully optimized for SEO, including:
Custom Meta Tags: Automatically generated titles and descriptions tailored to the specific tool's function and target keywords.
Automated Sitemaps: To help search engines index your tools quickly and keep your site structure clean.
Action-Oriented Design: Focused on solving specific user problems with a clean, intuitive interface that works on both desktop and mobile.
Step 1: Complete the Onboarding Flow
To get started, navigate to the SEO Tools section in your dashboard. The onboarding process helps the AI understand your business context to generate the most relevant tools.
Website Analysis: Enter your website URL. Our system will crawl your site to understand your niche, product offerings, and existing content. This ensures the tools generated align with your brand.
Business Details: Verify the extracted business name and product description. You can also define your target audience segments here (e.g., "Small Business Owners," "SEO Professionals"). The more specific you are, the better the AI can tailor the tools.
Audience & Competitors: Add URLs for your top 3-5 competitors. This allows the AI to find keyword gaps and "stolen" traffic opportunities—keywords your competitors rank for that you can target with a better tool.
Search Console Integration: (Recommended) Link your Google Search Console. This helps the system filter out keywords you already rank for, ensuring every tool targets new, untapped traffic.
Providing specific competitor URLs is the best way to ensure the generated tools are highly relevant to your industry. The AI looks for tools your competitors are missing or those that could be improved.
Step 2: Customize Your Interface
Your tools should look and feel like a native part of your brand. In the Interface Customization tab, you can configure the following:
Branding: Upload your logo and favicon (JPEG, PNG, or WEBP, max 100KB). Set your primary brand color using the hex color picker to match your main website.
Navigation: Add up to 3 custom links to your header (e.g., "Pricing", "Blog", "Contact") to keep users within your ecosystem and drive them toward your main product.
Social Profiles: Link your Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter) profiles. These will appear in the footer of your tools to build trust and social proof.
Call-to-Action (CTA): Configure a CTA block that appears at the end of every tool. This is your primary driver for converting tool users into customers.
CTA Title: e.g., "Ready to grow your SEO?"
CTA Button: e.g., "Start Free Trial"
Helper Text: e.g., "No credit card required."
Step 3: Set Up Your Custom Domain
You have two options for hosting your tools. Both options ensure the SEO "juice" stays on your domain, but they serve different technical needs.
Option A: Subdomain Hosting (Easiest)
This hosts your tools on a subdomain like tools.yourdomain.com. This is the recommended method for most users as it is easy to set up and manage.
Enter your desired subdomain in the Domain Settings.
Log in to your DNS provider (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare).
Add a CNAME record:
Name:
tools(or your chosen subdomain)Target/Points To:
seo-tools-container.onrender.com
Click Verify in the Outrank dashboard.
Option B: Path-Based Hosting (Advanced)
This hosts tools in a subfolder, such as yourdomain.com/tools. This is often preferred by SEO purists who want the tools to appear as part of the main site structure. This requires using a Cloudflare Worker to proxy the traffic.
Select Path-Based in the settings.
Enter your main domain and the desired base path (default is
/tools).Follow the on-screen instructions to deploy the provided script to your Cloudflare account. This script will intercept requests to your
/toolspath and serve the content from our servers seamlessly.
DNS changes can take 24-48 hours to propagate globally. If your domain doesn't verify immediately, please wait a few hours and try again.
The 90-Day Roadmap
Once your setup is complete, the AI begins a structured 90-day rollout of your tools. This gradual release helps search engines index your content naturally and prevents your site from being flagged for "spammy" behavior.
Phase 1 (Days 1-30): Focuses on "Low Hanging Fruit"—keywords with the lowest difficulty to get you ranking quickly and build initial momentum.
Phase 2 (Days 31-60): Targets "High Intent" keywords—tools that are more likely to drive direct conversions for your specific product or service.
Phase 3 (Days 61-90): Expands into "Niche Authority"—building specialized tools that establish your domain as a leader in your industry.
Best Practices for Tool Success
To get the most out of your custom SEO tools, follow these best practices:
Be Specific in Onboarding: The more detail you provide about your business and audience, the more relevant the tools will be. Don't just say "marketing," say "B2B SaaS marketing for startups."
Promote Your Tools: While the tools are built for organic search, you can speed up the process by sharing them on social media, in your newsletter, or on platforms like Product Hunt.
Monitor Performance: Use the dashboard to see which tools are getting the most engagement. If a tool is performing exceptionally well, consider writing a blog post that links to it to further boost its SEO.
Use the Regenerate Feature: If a tool's logic or output doesn't feel quite right, don't hesitate to regenerate it. The AI learns from your feedback.
Managing and Regenerating Tools
You can track the status of each tool in your dashboard:
Active: The tool is in the planning phase, and keywords are being finalized based on your niche.
Creating: The AI is currently building the tool interface, logic, and SEO meta tags. This usually takes a few minutes.
Deployed: The tool is live on your domain! You can click the link to view it.
If a generated tool doesn't meet your expectations, you can use the Regenerate button. This allows you to provide feedback or select a different keyword, and the AI will create a new version at no additional cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will these tools slow down my main website?
No. Because the tools are hosted on a subdomain or proxied via a Cloudflare Worker, they do not impact the loading speed of your main website. We use high-performance servers to ensure the tools themselves load lightning-fast.
Can I edit the tool logic myself?
Currently, the tool logic is generated by our AI to ensure it is optimized for the target keyword. However, you can use the "Regenerate" feature to refine the tool if the initial version doesn't meet your needs.
How many tools can I have?
The number of tools depends on your plan. On the standard autopilot plan, the system generates approximately 5 new tools per month (one per week) to ensure a steady growth of organic traffic.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Logo Upload Failures
If your logo fails to upload, ensure the file size is under 100KB and the format is JPEG, PNG, or WEBP. Large high-resolution files will be rejected to ensure fast tool loading speeds, which is a critical ranking factor for SEO.
Domain Verification Errors
If you see an "Invalid domain format" or "Failed to verify" error:
Double-check that the CNAME record exactly matches the "Points To" value provided in the dashboard.
Ensure there are no conflicting A or AAAA records for the same subdomain.
For Path-Based hosting, ensure the Cloudflare Worker is active and correctly configured with your
workerMainDomain.
Once your first tool is deployed, it will automatically be added to your tools home page (e.g., tools.yourdomain.com), creating a central hub for all your custom SEO utilities.
